Lent
variation ii
Lavastone and Bronze
Handmade Rosary

"There is not, never has been,
and never will be a single human being
for whom Christ did not suffer."

--  Catechism of the Catholic Church, 605

We had the Lenten journey in mind when we made this rosary.

The Coptic cross is cast from a 19th century Ethiopian original, in solid bronze.  The rosary center is hand-cast from a vintage Afghan piece.

The Paters are pewter, copper dipped, antiqued, and flecked with verdigris.  (You can see them a bit better in the detail photos, below.)  Alongside the Paters are various small beads in mottled old-golds and berry-purples;  these are high-fired Greek ceramic.

The Aves are lavastone, with natural pits and pocks that formed as the molten stone cooled.

Separating the Aves are small beads with a finish reminiscent of raku pottery -- in strong purples, blues, and sage greens;  these are Japanese matte glass.   Here and there are beads of matte gold glass, and small beads of ebony.

The rosary is strung on premium quality Soft Flex jewelers' cable, composed of 49 strands of steel encased in nylon, with a test strength of 26 pounds;  each end is double-crimped for security.  The connecting ring is solid bronze.
